In 2021 newly elected officials took office in Homer Township. Since then residents from all parts of Homer Township including Homer Glen, Lockport and Unincorporated Homer Township, are concerned about the high intensity plans being made for the Open Space Parcels of land by the new administration. This is NOT what voters intended for the lands when they voted for the Open Space Program and spent $8 million dollars purchasing the properties. Concerns range from an over development of the land to violations of the Illinois State Statute that governs how Open Space lands can be used and improved.

In 1998 Homer Township voters approved a referendum to start a Homer Township Open Space Program. The creation of this program and how lands can be obtained and used is governed by Illinois State Statute. Voters then voted to borrow $8 million to purchase land for Open Space. Additional parcels of land in Homer Township were donated by generous land owners. Four parcels of land were purchased totaling over 200 acres. They are known as “Welter Farm” in Homer Glen and ”Trantina Farm” in unincorporated Homer Township. The “Purdy Farm” and ”Paul Farm” are in areas of Homer Township that are also within the boundary of Lockport.
